Our no dig bed
We’ve had our no dig bed for a couple of years at the allotment. It’s been a great way to stay involved with growing things when it hasn’t been possible to physically use a spade to turn the soil. We’ve been really pleased with the results so far. A new layer of cardboard, fresh compost and a covering of black matting over the winter reduced the number of weeds in the bed. After the matting was moved in May we lightly raked the soil which was not compacted or covered with weeds ready for seeds and seedlings to be planted.
We added a border of bricks around the bed to stop the grass creeping into the bed, that hasn’t been that successful, but we are persevering, by regularly weed wacking (which is what they say in the Caribbean) or strimming, (which is what we call it in England) the borders around the beds.
